John Warburton Paul

Sir John Warburton Paul , GCMG (born March 29, 1916 in Weymouth , Dorset , † March 31, 2004 ) was a British governor and represented Queen Elizabeth II in the British colonies of Gambia , Bahamas and British Honduras as well as vice governor on the Isle of Man .

Life

John Warburton Paul was a governor known for serving the UK overseas territories for over 20 years. He probably had the greatest influence on the independence of the Gambia and the Bahamas, which he ruled as the last governor.

Paul graduated from the University of Cambridge . From March 29, 1962 he held the office of governor in Gambia until it declared its independence on February 18, 1965. Then he was the first Governor General of Gambia for one year until February 1966 . His successor was the Gambier Sir Farimang Singhateh . Paul then went to British Honduras (now Belize ), where he served as governor from 1972.

Paul then moved to the Bahamas and worked there for a year. He served as governor until the country became independent on July 10, 1973. He served as governor general until the end of the month.

Eventually Paul served as Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man from 1974 to 1980. Then he retired.

Paul married Kathleen Audrey Weeden in 1946, with whom he had three daughters. She died in December 2004, a few months after her husband.
