Governor General of Belize
The Governor General of Belize is the permanent representative of the Belizean monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II. Since the Central American country as a Commonwealth realm ( kingdom in the Commonwealth shares) to be head of state with 15 other nations, and this in the UK resides, who takes the Governor General 's duties normally. Sir Colville Young has been the incumbent since November 1993 .
Appointment and duties
According to the constitution, the Governor General must be a Belizean citizen and is appointed by the Queen for an indefinite period on the proposal of the Prime Minister. He can usually only act in constitutional matters on the initiative of the head of government or a minister. The chairman of the party that has an absolute majority in the House of Representatives must be appointed prime minister by the governor general in accordance with Article 37-2 of the Constitution. If the majority situation is unclear, he is obliged to appoint a member of the party that is likely to have a majority of the members. At the suggestion of the Prime Minister, he appoints the remaining members of the cabinet , but they must be either members of the Belizean House of Representatives or the Senate .
In accordance with Article 47, the Governor-General officially appoints the member of the House of Representatives as "leader of the opposition" who can unite the majority of the MPs of the opposition groups. According to the constitution, the opposition leader is important because he has a say in the appointment of members of the Belize Advisory Council to advise the governor-general on mercy matters .
