Cornelius Alfred Moloney

Sir Cornelius Alfred Moloney KCMG ( 1848 - August 13, 1913 ) was a British colonial administrator .

Life

He served as British administrator of Gambia from 1884 to 1886 , Governor of Lagos from 1886 to 1890 , Governor of British Honduras from 1891 to 1897 , Governor of the Windward Islands from 1897 to 1900, and Governor of Trinidad and Tobago between 1901 and 1904 . During his tenure in 1903 the Water Riots took place in Trinidad and Tobago , violent protests against the increase in water prices. Protesters burned the parliament building in Port of Spain and the police shot and killed 16 demonstrators. As a result of the unrest, Moloney was removed from office.

Awards and honors

In 1882 he was accepted as a Companion (CMG) in the Order of St. Michael and St. George and in 1890 knighted as Knight Commander of the same Order (KCMG) .

The Moloney's narrow-winged bat ( Mimetillus moloneyi ) is named after him.

family

Moloney was married twice, since 1881 first marriage to Constance († 1891), daughter of W. Clifford Knight, and from 1897 in second marriage to Frances, daughter of H. Owen Lewis.
