James Shaw Hay
Sir James Shaw Hay KCMG (born October 25, 1839 , † June 20, 1924 ) was a British colonial administrator .
Life
Hay served in the 89th Regiment of Foot in British India during the Indian Uprising of 1857 . He then joined the colonial service and was employed in the Gold Coast (1875-1880). He then worked as inspector general of the police in Mauritius (1880–1885).
He was then provided as a British administrator in British Gambia . He reached Bathurst (then name of Banjul) in February 1886 and then left Gambia in June for Freetown to serve as Deputy Governor of Sierra Leone . Hay did not return to Bathurst. After the death of Governor Samuel Rowe , he was promoted to Governor of Sierra Leone (1888-1891). He was later used in the same position in Barbados (1892-1900).
