Moloney's narrow-winged bat ( Mimetillus moloneyi ) is a species of bat from the smooth-nosed family (Vespertilionidae) that occurs in Africa .

features

The species reaches a head body length of 48 to 58 mm, a tail length of 26 to 38 mm and a weight of 6.0 to 11.5 g. The forearms are 27 to 31 mm long. The small wingspan of about 175 mm is striking . The fur is predominantly dark brown to black in color, occasionally with a reddish tinge. Further characteristics are the triangular ears with rounded tips, the flat skull and the short hind legs. Sexually mature animals have large glands on their snouts.

distribution and habitat

Moloney's narrow-winged bat inhabits the central areas of Africa, but does not occur in the dense rainforest of the Congo Basin . The distribution area extends from Sierra Leone eastwards to western Ethiopia and Kenya , then southwards to Mozambique and from here westwards to Angola . In mountains, 2300 meters above sea level are reached. This bat lives in landscapes where savannahs and smaller forests alternate. She also visits the fringes of the rainforest.

Way of life

Smaller groups of 9 to 12 individuals rest under the detached bark of older trees or in buildings. At night they hunt flying insects. Due to the small wingspan, Moloney's narrow-winged bat needs an increased jump area in order to be able to reach the necessary flight speed. With its rapid flapping of wings, the species can be easily distinguished from other bats in Africa. A break is necessary after a 10 to 15 minute flight.

The birth of the young takes place at the end of the dry season. A litter usually consists of one young animal.
