The Democratic Labor Party (DLP) of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart was by a narrow margin of two seats against the Barbados Labor Party retained power (BLP). On February 22, 2013, Stuart was sworn in as Prime Minister by Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave . Stuart had already assumed the office in October 2010 when his predecessor David Thompson passed away.

During the election campaign, the DLP pledged to make Barbados a country that is “socially just, economically healthy, environmentally friendly and characterized by good governance”. The BLP promised to cut VAT on electricity and groceries from 17.5% to 15% in an effort to reduce the cost of living. BLP boss Owen Arthur took responsibility for the defeat and resigned after the elections. He was replaced by Mia Mottley.
