General election in Cuba 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2013 parliamentary elections in Cuba took place on February 3rd. 8.4 million eligible voters elected 612 members of the National Assembly and 1269 delegates at the provincial level. Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl were among the candidates.

procedure

In the morning, 30,000 polling stations opened nationwide. Since Cuba has a one-party system which is ruled by the Communist Party , the choice was not free . There were candidates who were nominated by the local parliaments and the mass organizations. They ran for the direct mandates of the constituencies. Almost all of them are party members. Every Cuban citizen was allowed to vote from the age of 16 and be elected from the age of 18. Fidel Castro surprisingly appeared in public again after almost a year, only to cast his vote in person at a polling station for the first time since his serious illness in 2005. Head of State Raúl Castro voted in his constituency in Segundo Frente .

Results

According to the preliminary official final result, all 612 candidates for the national and 1269 delegates for the 15 provincial parliaments were confirmed. 7,877,906 eligible voters voted. The turnout was 89.68%, which is by far the lowest value in elections in socialist Cuba. 94.17% of the votes were valid. 4.63% of the votes cast were “white”, which means that none of the candidates represented on the ballot were ticked. 1.2% of the votes were invalid. The opposition had called for an election boycott or an invalid vote.

On February 24th, at the constituent session of the new parliament, the new 31-member State Council was elected and Raúl Castro was allowed to take up his second five-year term as head of state.
