Parliamentary election in Togo 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Togo took place on July 25, 2013.

The elections were originally supposed to take place in October 2012 but had to be postponed to March 24, 2013, then to July 21, and finally to July 25, 2013 due to protests.

Electoral system

The 91 members of the National Assembly , the Togolese parliament, were elected . So far this has included 81 people.

For the elections, the country was divided into 30 electoral districts. Each district had between two and ten seats. A total of 1174 Togolese applied for a seat of parliament, among them 159 women and 31 previous parliamentarians.

background

The elections had to be postponed several times as the opposition parties demanded electoral reforms. It was not until July that the government made some concessions and released ten opposition activists who were arrested in January for arson in two markets. In addition, the opposition was allowed to provide some representatives of the election commission and in the polling stations and received financial support for the election campaign. Fundamental reforms failed to materialize. In the run-up to the elections, there were street protests against which the security forces used tear gas.

The polls went off without incident. According to election observers from the African Union and ECOWAS , the elections were fair. The opposition party CST claims, however, that there were irregularities.

Result

The ruling party UNIR clearly won the elections. According to the provisional results, the party around President Faure Gnassingbé is said to have won 62 of the 91 seats. Especially in the north of the country she was able to get a lot of votes. Opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre's CST coalition had 19 seats. She received a lot of support from the capital Lomé , where she was able to secure seven of the ten seats. The former opposition party around Gilchrist Olympio can now only have three MPs.

The following list contains the provisional election result. This now has to be confirmed by the constitutional court.
