Presidential election in Togo 2010

President-elect: Faure Gnassingbé

The 2010 presidential elections in Togo took place on March 4, 2010 in Togo , West Africa . According to the official result, the ruling President Faure Gnassingbé won more than 60% of all votes and Jean-Pierre Fabre , his only serious competitor, 33%. Of the remaining five candidates, Yawovi Agboyibo was the only one to receive more than 1% approval with 3% of the votes cast .

After Gnassingbé's victory in the last presidential election in 2005 had been widely doubted and had sparked violent protests, he tried to make the election process more credible. Nevertheless, the opposition accused him of massive electoral fraud. In their report, election observers from the European Union recorded voting purchases by the ruling party, but saw no evidence of the widespread election fraud alleged by the opposition and, like other international observers, came to the conclusion that the "irregularities" observed had no decisive influence on the overall result . After his victory was confirmed by the National Electoral Commission, Gnassingbé again took his oath of office as President of Togo on May 3, 2010.

The candidates

Accepted candidates:

Candidates not accepted:

  • The 72-year-old Gilchrist Olympio , who lived in the USA at the time , was a permanent candidate for his Union des Forces du Changement party, but a back disease prevented him from getting to Togo in time to undergo the medical examination required for presidential candidates.
  • Dahuku Péré

and

  • Kokou Ségnon Nsoukpoe were rejected by the electoral commission because they were unable to leave the deposit, which was the condition for acceptance of the candidacy and which should be paid back if more than 5% of the vote was reached.
  • Originally, Kofi Yamgnane was also accepted as an independent candidate by the electoral commission . Yamgnane has both French and Togolese citizenship. However, the Constitutional Court rejected his candidacy because there was a discrepancy between his French identity document and his Togolese documents related to his date of birth. The rejected Yamgnane saw this as an attempt by the rulers to throw a candidate who was dangerous to them from the race.

Disagreement among the opposition

Attempts by the opposition to agree on a candidate in the run-up to the election failed. However, Agbéyomé Kodjo withdrew his candidacy in favor of Fabré (but his name still appeared on the ballot) and the rejected Yamgnane also declared his support for Fabré.

After the election: split of the UFC

After the election there was an open rift between the factions Fabrés and Olympios within the UFC as the largest opposition party. Olympio had started negotiations with Gnassingbé regarding the participation of the UFC and achieved that 7 out of 31 ministers in the new government were appointed by the UFC. Fabré called the agreement, however, as contrary to the will of the National Office of the UFC. The inner-party conflict finally ended with the expulsion of Olympios from the party of which he was the founder and long-time president.
