Presidential election in Togo 1998

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1998 presidential election in Togo was held on June 21, 1998 in the West African state of Togo . President Gnassingbé Eyadéma was re-elected after a good 30 years of dictatorial government, according to official figures, with 52.1% of the votes cast. The opposition denied the result and claimed victory for their candidate Gilchrist Olympio of the Union des Forces du Changement (UFC). International observers confirmed that intimidation and harassment prevented voters from exercising their right to vote, to the massive advantage of the incumbent, and that the result was not representative.

The Constitutional Court nevertheless determined that Eyadema had "won the election" on July 10, 1998, and Eyadema was sworn in on July 24 in the National Assembly. The opposition boycotted the ceremony.
