The Asian house martin ( Delichon dasypus ), also known as the cashmere swallow , is a species of the genus Delichon , which belongs to the swallow family.

Appearance

Asiatic adult house martins have the characteristic appearance of Delichon species. They have a dark to black-bluish upper side of the body. The body length of this species is 12 centimeters. The Asian House Martin is different from the well in Central Europe brooding Mehlschwalbe by its gray throat and gray-brown coloring of the lower wing. The Nepalese swallow, on the other hand, has a black throat; her tail looks cut straight.

behavior

The Asiatic House martin is a rock breeder that normally nests in colonies on rock overhangs. Similar to the house martin, it occasionally builds its nests on large buildings such as temples or bridges . The nest is a hemisphere and is built from clay and moist clods of earth. The clutch consists of three to four eggs. Two clutches per year are very common. The Asian house martin is one of the insectivorous birds. It captures its food in flight.

Subspecies

There are three subspecies of this species:

  • D. d. dasypus is native to southeast Russia and Japan;
  • D. d. cashmeriense (Gould 1858) is in the Himalayas ,
  • D. d. nigrimentale (E. Hartert 1910) is common in southern China .

The nominate form winters in southeast Asia, although some stay near hot springs in the winter months. The subspecies D. d. cashmeriense remains in its area of distribution and only resides at lower altitudes. The wintering area of D. d. nigrimentary , however, is unknown.
