Parodia aureicentra is a species of the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet aureicentra is derived from the Latin words aureus for 'yellow' and centrum for 'middle' and refers to the color of the central spines.
description
Parodia aureicentra grows individually. The dark green spherical shoots are densely thorn and reach a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. There are 13 to 15 ribs . The areoles on them are woolly white. The six to ten dark yellowish brown central spines have lengths of 1.5 to 2 centimeters. Some of them are usually slightly or clearly hooked. The approximately 40 bristle-like radial spines are also dark yellowish brown and up to 1.2 centimeters long.
The bright, deep red flowers reach a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. The fruits contain small brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Parodia aureicentra is common in the Argentine province of Salta .
The first description by Curt Backeberg was published in 1936. A nomenclature synonym is Bolivicactus aureicentrus (Backeb.) Doweld (2000). There are numerous other synonyms.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
