Parodia haselbergii grows individually with bright green to gray-green spherical shoots whose apices are slightly depressed and reach a diameter of 7 to 8 centimeters. The 30 or more spirally arranged ribs are somewhat humped. There are white areoles on them . The three to five yellowish central spines are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. They are light green initially and darken as they ripen. The fruits contain elongated, cap-shaped, glossy black seeds that are humped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The first description as Echinocactus haselbergii by Karl Theodor Rümpler was published in 1896. Fred H. Brandt placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1982 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Malacocarpus haselbergii ( F. Haage ex Rümpler) Britton & Rose (1922, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Notocactus haselbergii ( F. Haage ex Rümpler) A. Berger (1929), Brasilicactus haselbergii (F. Haage ex Rümpler ) Frič (1935, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Brasilicactus haselbergii ( F. Haage ex Rümpler) Backeb. (1942, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4?) And Sericocactus haselbergii ( F. Haage ex Rümpler) Y.Itô (1957).

The following subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Parodia haselbergii subsp. haselbergii
  • Parodia haselbergii subsp. graessneri (K.Schum.) Hofacker & PJBraun
  • Parodia haselbergii forma microdasys (PJBraun) PJBraun

Parodia haselbergii subsp. haselbergii has about 20 radial spines and yellowish red to orange-red flowers.

Parodia haselbergii subsp. graessneri has up to 60 or more radial spines and yellowish green to light green flowers. The first description as Echinocactus graessneri by Karl Moritz Schumann was published in 1903. Nomenclatory synonyms are Malacocarpus graessneri (K.Schum.) Britton & Rose (1922, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Notocactus graessneri (K.Schum.) A.Berger (1929), Brasilicactus graessneri (K.Schum.)
