Parodia langsdorfii is a species of Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet langsdorfii honors the German explorer Georg Heinrich von Langsdorff .

description

Parodia langsdorfii grows individually or in groups. The gray-green spherical to cylindrical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 10 centimeters (and more) and diameters of 4 to 9 centimeters. The tip of the shoot is densely woolly. The 13 to 17 blunt ribs are clearly humped. The one to four brownish central spines are straight and have a length of up to 2.5 centimeters. The six to nine unequal, somewhat spreading radial spines are brown and 1.2 to 2 inches long.

The yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 2.5 centimeters and the same diameter. The scars are red. The pale green barrel-shaped fruits are wrapped in white wool and never turn red. They have a diameter of 3 to 4 millimeters and are up to 7 millimeters long. The fruits contain bell-shaped, dull black seeds that are finely tuberous.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia langsdorfii is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

The first description as Cactus langsdorfii by Johann Georg Christian Lehmann was published in 1826. David Richard Hunt placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1997 . Further nomenclature synonyms are Malacocarpus langsdorfii (loam.) Britton & Rose (1922, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Wigginsia langsdorfii (loam.) DMPorter (1964), Notocactus langsdorfii (loam.) Krainz (1966) and Ritterocactus langsdorfii (loam .) Doweld (2000).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
