Parodia microsperma is a species of Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet microsperma is derived from the Greek words mikros for 'small' and sperma for 'semen'.

Parodia microsperma usually grows individually, but sometimes forms small groups. The reddish gray to green, depressed spherical, spherical or occasionally columnar shoots reach heights of growth of 5 to 20 centimeters and diameters of 5 to 10 centimeters. The 15 to 21 ribs are usually arranged in a spiral and tubercles. The three to four central spines are occasionally hooked. They are reddish to brownish or blackish and have a length of 0.5 to 5 centimeters. The seven to 30 bristle-like or stiff radial spines are white and 0.4 to 0.8 inches long.

The yellow to orange or red flowers reach lengths of 3 to 3.5 centimeters and diameters of 4 to 5 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the tube of flowers are covered with white wool and bristles. The scars are light yellow. The approximately spherical fruits have a diameter of 4 to 5 millimeters. They contain smooth, glossy brown seeds up to 0.5 millimeters in length that have a large white strophiola .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia microsperma is common in northern Argentina .

The first description as Echinocactus microspermus by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber was published in 1896. Carlos Luis Spegazzini placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1923 . Other nomenclatory synonyms are Hickenia microsperma (FACWeber) Britton & Rose (1922, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Neohickenia microsperma (FACWeber) Frič (1928, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4) and Microspermia microsperma (FACWeber.) Frič ( 193535 Name ICBN -Article 11.4). Due to the variability of the species, there are numerous other synonyms.

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Parodia microsperma subsp. microsperma
  • Parodia microsperma subsp. horrida (FHBrandt) R. Kiesling & O.Ferrari

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
