Paroedura picta is a species of scallop reptile fromthe gecko family (Gekkonidae). In German, like other species of the genus Paroedura, the species isreferred to as the Madagascar large head gecko. The species wasscientifically described in 1854 by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters as Diplodactylus pictus .

features

Paroedura picta reaches a maximum total length of 14 cm. The females are slightly smaller than the males. The animals are mostly brown with blackish cross bars or lighter spots. But there are also almost black animals with light-colored crossbars, albeit rarely. Some animals have a light back stripe.

Paroedura picta lives in the south and south-west of Madagascar and mainly inhabits dry forests and savannas. The terra typica is St. Augustins Bay .

Way of life

Paroedura picta is a nocturnal ground dweller and feeds mainly on insects. During the day you can find the animals under stones or large pieces of wood. The females have a reserve fertilization. After mating, they can lay down several clutches, each consisting of two eggs.
