Parthenope (also Paleopolis ) was the name of an ancient Greek city that was located in the area of today's city of Naples . The name Parthenope comes from Greek mythology , more precisely from the Greek siren Parthenope , which is said to have washed ashore on the city's coast.

Parthenope was built on the hill Pizzofalcone (also Monte Echia or Monte di Dio ) and the small island Megaride directly on the coast . The city was in what is now the San Ferdinando district by the sea. Parthenope was the first predecessor of today's city and was founded around 700 BC. Founded by Greek settlers from nearby Cumae .

Around 500 BC A second Greek city was founded in the northwest of Parthenope, called Neapolis ("New City"). From then on, Parthenope was also called Paleopolis ("Old City").
