Partidul Conservator (PC, German  Conservative Party ) was a political party in Romania.

history

The formation was founded in December 1991 under the name Partidul Umanist Român (PUR, Romanian Humanist Party ). The dominant personality was Dan Voiculescu .

Dan Voiculescu and his family own several mass media outlets in Romania. He was proven to work for the former communist secret service Securitate . Voiculescu claims that his secret service activities did not harm anyone.

In political life, the party usually played a subordinate role. Because of Romanian suffrage, she is forced to enter into electoral alliances with larger parties in order to be able to send some members to the national parliament.

After the 2000 elections, the PUR joined a government led by the Social Democrats (PSD) , but withdrew again in 2002. For the elections at the end of 2004, Partidul Umanist Român ran on a list with the Social Democrats . Their representatives elected to the House of Representatives then enabled the election of the civil prime minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu from the PNL and participated in his government.

In May 2005 the party gave itself its current name. This should take into account the realignment of content. Until then, the party had mainly represented left-wing liberal positions , which have since been conservative. After disputes in the government, the PC resigned from the Popescu-Tăriceanu government in December 2006 and has since been in the opposition again.

At the end of August 2008, the PC again concluded an electoral alliance with the PSD for the parliamentary elections in November 2008 , which made it possible for the PC to run 25 candidates on the PSD's lists. It provided three parliamentarians in the House of Representatives and one in the Senate.

Daniel Constantin had been party chairman since February 2010 .

In June 2015 the PC merged with the Partidul Liberal Reformator to form the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE).

Political orientation

According to its own account, the party advocated traditional values (family, social solidarity) and European integration. In economic terms, she saw herself mainly at the side of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs. She propagated religious values and demanded z. B. compulsory religious education in Romanian schools.
