Parvaneh Salahshouri ( Persian پروانه سلحشوری Parwane Salahshuri ; * 1964 in Masjed Soleyman ) is an Iranian sociologist and politician .

Career

Salahshouri is a professor at Azad Islamic University and has taught sociology . In the 2016 election for the tenth Majles , the Iranian parliament, she received 36.91 percent of the votes in the constituency of Tehran , Ray , Shemiranat and Eslamshahr .

Salahshouri stood for the List of Hope (لیست امید) and belongs to the coalition of reformers. In parliament she leads the “Women's Group” (فراکسیون زنان), which campaigns for women's rights in Iran. The parliamentary group includes the 17 women in the Majles across all parties. Compared to the 2012 election, their number has increased by eight and represents a “record share” of 5.9 percent. In contrast, the global average is a proportion of female MPs of 24 percent (2019). Salahshouri denounces the patriarchal structures in parliament and calls for a women's quota of 17 percent.

Salahshouri was the first woman in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran to question the obligation to wear the hijab . In an interview, she argued that it is every woman's right to choose whether to wear the hijab or not. One day after the conversation, she changed her line of argument and said that the chador was more appropriate for Iranian women.
