The Pass of the Republic ( Bulgarian Проход на Републиката / Prohod na Republikata until 1948 Хаинбоазки проход / Chainboaski Prohod, or only Хаинбоаз / Chainboas) is a major mountain pass in Bulgaria in the central Balkan Mountains . The 2nd order II / 55 national road runs over the pass , one of the country's most important arteries and transit traffic between the Bulgarian-Turkish border and the Bulgarian-Romanian border . The following villages lie along the pass (from south to north): Ptschelinowo , Slatirad , Lagerite , Mishemorkov Khan , Ivanovtsi , Piramidata , Bischuwzi , Ruskowzi , Rajkowzi , Bojtschowzi and Dimowzi .
In July 1877 General Josef Gurko managed to bypass the Ottoman troops over the pass during the Russo-Ottoman War , to pass the mountains and then to take Stara Sagora .
After the founding of the People's Republic of Bulgaria , the first youth brigade of the Communist Youth Union Dimitroff (Димитровски комунистически младежки съюз), organized by the Bulgarian Communist Party , was deployed on the pass , which widened and paved the road.
Between 2006 and 2009 the pass road was renewed and expanded in some places.
