The Mariahilf picture by Lucas Cranach in Innsbruck (detail)

The Passau image of the Virgin Mary in Warsaw is a Christian votive figure of the Mother of God , which was erected in the Kraków suburb in Warsaw not far from Warsaw's old town .

The votive figure is the work of the Warsaw-based Italian sculptor and architect Giuseppe Simone Bellotti († 1708). It was built in 1683 as a votive offering by the sculptor for the protection of his family during the plague epidemic that raged in Warsaw in 1677, and at the same time as a votive offering from King John III. Sobieski for the victory over the Turks during the Battle of Kahlenberg in 1683.

The sculpture repeats the miraculous image of Mariahilf from the Mariahilf pilgrimage church in Passau in three dimensions . The Passau miraculous image is a copy made in 1620 of the Innsbruck altar painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder from the early 16th century.

It is not clear whether Belotti visited Passau or Innsbruck. He could also use a woodcut or copperplate graphic as a model.

The figure stands on a sandstone base. There are votive inscriptions in Latin or Italian on the four sides.

The figure was crowned in the 1830s . In 1866 it was moved to its current location. Decorative lanterns were placed on both sides. In 1905 the original baroque plinth was raised onto a stone Art Nouveau substructure. A wrought iron enclosure was also built on stone posts.

The votive figure survived the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 undamaged. In 2001 it was renewed thanks to the care of Franz Batthyány and his company.

On a horizontal plaque it says:

“Passau Madonna, erected by the royal sculptor Josef Simon Belotti, dedicated to King Jan III Sobieski in memory of his victory of Vienna against the Turks on September 12, 1683, venerated by the Warsaw residents, restored to its former glory AD 2001 in the spirit of a united Europe thanks Care of Franz Batthyány [...].
