Systematics

Pastinachus gracilicaudus was first in 2010 as part of a research project of the Australian CSIRO described . Together with two other within the project types described advanced until then with Sephen pastinachus as monotypic viewed genus pastinachus . Based on phylogenetic studies, a species described by Macleay in 1883 as Pastinachus atrus was also assigned to the genus. The latter is also the genetically closest relative of Pastinachus gracilicaudus .
