The genus Pastinachus belongs to the stingray family (Dasyatidae). The species of the genus live in large parts of the Indo-Pacific between the Red Sea in the west and the East China Sea and Melanesia in the east.
features
Several species live sympatricly in the Malay Archipelago and have not been considered separate species for a long time, although they differ both in size, in the ratio of the total length to the width of the fin disc and other characteristics. The fin disc is diamond-shaped (trapezoidal). The tail has a fold of skin on the underside, which in the first described species, Pastinachus sephen , led to the common name Cowtail stingray (cowtail stingray). The width of the fold varies between species. The color is gray-brown with a reddish hue.
species
Pastinachus was long regarded as monotypical , with Pastinachus sephen as the only species. In the context of the Australian CSIRO project, one new species was described in 2005 and two more in 2010 and assigned to the genus. Some specimens of the species described by Macleay in 1883 as Taeniura atra were also examined molecularly and compared with other species, which led to the reassignment as Pastinachus atrus .
- Pastinachus atrus ( Macleay , 1883)
- Pastinachus gracilicaudus ( Last & Manjaji-Matsumoto, 2010)
- Pastinachus sephen ( Forsskål , 1775)
- Pastinachus solocirostris (Last, Manjaji & Yearsley, 2005)
- Pastinachus stellurostris (Last, Fahmi & Naylor, 2010)
Phylogeny
If you combine the molecular genetic relationship analysis of the NADH2 DNA, which was used to assign Pastinachus stellurostris , and the analysis of the COI gene, with which Pastinachus gracilicaudus was assessed accordingly, the following cladogram for the genus results :
