history

Mannequin with Patagonia clothing and equipment

The Patagonia story began with Yvon Chouinard's desire to have better climbing equipment available. From climbing he knew which improvements were possible and quickly implemented them himself. He produced and sold carabiners, hooks and other equipment under the name Chouinard Equipment . Only after a trip to Scotland, where he bought polo shirts and began to import them to the USA, did he devote himself to the subject of outdoor clothing.

The name Patagonia came to Yvon Chouinard after a trip through the Patagonia region in South America. In 1973, in addition to the climbing equipment company named after himself, he founded Patagonia, his own company for outdoor clothing.

Ecological responsibility

Patagonia co-founded the One Percent for the Planet alliance in 2002 . This voluntary association of companies undertakes to donate 1% of total sales or 10% of profits to environmental organizations . Patagonia claims to have donated $ 89 million to a total of 1,539 environmental groups by mid-2020.

Since 2011, Patagonia has been promoting the repair, recycling, reuse and resale or transfer of (used) clothing with its commitment. In a full-page advertisement in the New York Times under the heading Don't buy this jacket, they pointed out that their products had good environmental data, but called for people to only buy what you can really need. Since 2013, the company has stated that it has been skeptical of the concept of economic growth because there is a point at which growth would directly or indirectly endanger living conditions. Responsible growth would only be that which takes social and ecological consequences into account. As a privately owned company with no structural credit obligations, Patagonia can steer its business decisions independently.

In 2015, the company sent a workshop vehicle through the USA to repair used products of their brand free of charge and thus make them usable for longer. In 2020 there was a European "Worn Wear Tour" on which clothing from all manufacturers was repaired free of charge at various European locations.

Social responsibility

In 2010, the non-governmental organization Declaration of Bern compared the standards of working conditions in production countries by means of surveys and internet research at 77 fashion labels. Patagonia was placed in the second best “Average” category out of five categories. In the “outdoor guide” of the Bern / Public Eye Declaration of 2012, Patagonia achieved a place in the highest category “advanced”.
