A Pate club is characterized in that the association one or more twinning has. Within the custom of club life, the sponsoring club takes on obligations for another club. There are also known sponsor associations that act as an association of several sponsors with a wide variety of goals.

Sponsorship Association in Customs

The sponsoring association assumes different obligations for another subject. Depending on the design, this can be a special role in the establishment of other associations or also serve to emphasize a particularly close relationship between associations. In regions of Lower Bavaria, recognition by a sponsoring association is one of the requirements for flag consecration . As part of this ritualized Christian tradition, the sponsor association donates the flag ribbons for the consecration of the flag. It is also possible that flag ribbons come from several sponsoring associations. The time of origin of the custom is unknown. It is also practiced differently in different regions.

Sponsorship requests

A well-known form of custom in southern Germany is practiced as a "sponsorship request". Before a sponsoring association officially takes on its role, it is requested. To this end, the majority of the members, led by the board of directors, in the case of fire brigades also the command and mayor , travel to the future sponsorship association. They hand over gifts and make their requests, often in rhymes. This is rejected at first, but then taken over after completing several tasks. Often the "kneeling on the top" (kneeling on a log), manual tasks with poor tools such as cutting a piece of wood with a blunt saw and other dexterity exercises after consuming spirits are part of the tasks. After such examinations, the request is made again and usually accepted unanimously.

Other customs

The sponsoring association plays a prominent role at club celebrations. For example, a sponsor association is particularly welcomed at the founding party / anniversary celebrations and does not only take part in the church parade or pageant like the other guest associations, but also takes part in other program items such as the evening of honor and the commemoration of the dead. The sponsor association has a place of honor in the pageant . The sponsor usually also hands over a banner to show the friendship between the two clubs. These and other flag ribbons remain with the flag of the accepting club as a sign of solidarity.

Sponsorship associations of aid and donation organizations

Within the framework of sponsorships, there are associations that serve as an association of a number of sponsors with specific funding goals. International donor child sponsorships are particularly well known . Even local sponsorships and regional associations acting as the Swiss Sponsorship for Mountain communities are known.
