Patient information

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under patient information refers to publications with information for medical laymen on issues of health and health promotion , to disease and examination - and treatment options and to facilities of health care (eg. Hospitals , doctors' offices , health insurance , etc.).

Patient information on medical topics should enable patients in particular to understand and classify an illness or its symptoms . They should provide information about benefits, risks and side effects , but also warn against useless, superfluous and harmful measures.

In Switzerland, the patient information leaflet for medicines is also called patient information.

Development of patient information

Comprehensive and as objective as possible patient information with medical content is developed - similar to medical guidelines - on the basis of the best available scientific evidence (the so-called evidence ). Such patient information is also called patient guidelines or - if it concerns systematic recommendations for healthy people - health guidelines (see e.g. under National Health Care Guideline ). Evidence-based patient information is an essential part of medical decision support for patients .

The informed patient

The “informed patient” is the goal that Deutsche Krebshilfe supports in the intention of meeting the doctor as a partner and being able to ask him precise questions. The series of free brochures on diseases, diagnostics and healing chances, rich in topics, was supplemented in early 2011 by the first "cancer dictionary". It explains medical terms. The publications “are always checked for their accuracy by well-known specialists”, explained the doctor Eva M. Kalbheim from the German Cancer Aid in Bonn. The texts are also regularly adapted to current scientific knowledge.
