Patrick Wayne Kearney (* 1940 in Texas ) is an American serial killer , who became known as the "Trash Bag Murderer" (German: " Trash Bag Murderer " ). He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 21 men between 1965 and 1977. However, he is suspected of having committed at least seven other murders.

According to his own statement, Kearney had a desire to kill when he was eight. In 1965 he put this into practice along the California highways. He mainly looked for his victims in gay bars and bus stops, had them sit in the passenger seat of his Volkswagen and drove them to remote places with the prospect of sex. While driving, he shot his unsuspecting victims with a pistol, stripped them and sexually assaulted the corpses . He then chopped up the bodies with a saw and disposed of the body parts in garbage bags along the highways.

On July 1, 1977, Kearney surrendered to the police and made a full confession to avoid the death penalty. He had been suspected since May 18, 1977 and should be questioned, but was on the run. He eventually confessed to the murder of 28 men; 21 murders were proven beyond doubt, and despite the confession of the remaining seven victims, no sufficient evidence of a perpetrator could be produced. He was sentenced to 21 life sentences on February 21, 1978 for 21 murders and is serving the sentence in Mule Creek State Prison in Ione , California.
