Patrick Wright, Baron Wright of Richmond

Patrick Richard Henry Wright, Baron Wright of Richmond GCMG ( June 28, 1931 - March 6, 2020 ) was a British diplomat and politician.

Career

Wright was ambassador to Luxembourg from 1977 to 1979, to Syria from 1979 to 1981 and to Saudi Arabia from 1984 to 1986 . From 1986 to 1991 he was a permanent secretary of state in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office .

Wright was inducted into the Order of St Michael and St George as a Companion in 1978 . In 1984 he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the same order and in 1989 he was elevated to the Knight Grand Cross (GCMG) of the same order. In 1990 he was accepted as a Knight in the Order of Saint John .

On February 10, 1994, he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Wright of Richmond , of Richmond upon Thames in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, and thereby became a member of the House of Lords .

He was married to Virginia Anne Gaffney from 1958, with whom he had two sons and a daughter (Olivia). Olivia's husband, Ambassador Simon McDonald , was Gordon Brown's foreign policy advisor until 2010 .
