Simon McDonald

Sir Simon Gerard McDonald KCMG KCVO (born March 9, 1961 in Salford , England ) is a British diplomat, Permanent Under-Secretary in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service.

Career

McDonald was educated at De La Salle College, Salford and Pembroke College , Cambridge . In 1981 he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and was deployed in Jedda , Riyadh , Bonn and Washington, DC and London. He was First Secretary to the British Foreign Secretary (2001–2003), Ambassador to Israel (2003–2006), Head of Department for Iraq at the State Department (2006–2007), Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister and Head of Overseas and Distribution Secretary of the Cabinet Office (2007–2007) 10). In October 2010 he was appointed ambassador to Germany.

In September 2016 he became Permanent Under-Secretary in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service, successor to Sir Simon Fraser . As of 2015, McDonald received a salary of between £ 180,000 and £ 184,999 from the State Department. It was one of the 328 best salaries in the UK public sector that year.

Honors

McDonald was named Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2004 and Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in 2014 on the royal birthday for his services in foreign policy and the representation of British interests appointed in Germany. During the Queen's visit to Germany in June 2015, he was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO).

family

In 1989, Simon McDonald married Olivia, daughter of Sir Patrick Wright , later Baron Wright of Richmond . The couple have four children.
