Male nude, called Patroclus ( French : Académie d'homme, dit Patrocle ), is an oil painting by the French painter Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825). It was written in Rome around 1780 and shows Patroclus , Achilles' lover .

The work hangs in Cherbourg-Octeville .

Image description

It is an unusual picture because it does not show a face. The artist's focus is solely on the anatomy of the body, on the muscles that are tense due to the position. The focus is not on the representation of the person, but on the mastery of the painter.

The work has a size of 121.5 × 170.5 cm and was painted in oil on canvas.

genesis

In 1774 David received the first prize of the Prix de Rome , a grant for a stay of several years in Rome, for the painting The Doctor Erasistratos Discovered the Cause of Antiochus' Disease . His teacher Joseph-Marie Vien was appointed director of the Académie de France à Rome at the same time . Teachers and students traveled to Rome together. There David devoted himself above all to the study of antiquity and that of the Italian masters of the High Renaissance . Among other things, he dealt with male files, a Hector and the objective Patroclus .

Burial of Patroclus, 1778

The figure of Patroclus and his tragic death seems to have particularly inspired the painter, as the oil painting The Burial of Patroclus and the aforementioned Hector were also created in Rome . This had killed Patroclus and had been killed in return by Achilles.
