Paul & Paula was an American singing duo . The group became known with their first title Hey Paula , which reached number 1 on the US Billboard charts in 1963 .

history

The duo consisted of Ray Hildebrand (born December 21, 1940 in Joshua, Texas) and Jill Jackson (born May 20, 1942 in McCamey , Texas), who studied together at Howard Payne College in Brownwood , Texas. Both followed a call from a local radio station in the fall of 1962 to step in front of the microphone and sing a track on behalf of the American Cancer Society . They decided on the duet Hey Paula , which Hildebrand had written in 1962.

The title was first released as a single by LeCam Records shortly afterwards, the duo still called themselves Jill and Ray at the time . Mercury Records became aware of the duo and released the single at their subsidiary Philips Records. The record company changed the name of the duo from the title Hey Paula to Paul & Paula . Hey Paula became the duo's greatest success: In February 1963, the single stayed at number 1 on the Billboard charts (pop singles) for three weeks and also made it into the R&B single charts. The subsequent single Young Lovers reached number 6 on the charts, while the third single First Quarrel only came to number 27. In 1965, the duo separated.

Hildebrand and Jackson turned to solo projects. Hildebrand worked as a songwriter and producer and formed the duo Land & Hildebrand with the singer Paul Land in the 1980s, which mainly performed and recorded gospel music . Jackson began a solo career as a singer, but could not build on previous successes of the duo.
