Emil Camenisch (born April 17, 1874 in Sarn ; † July 17, 1958 in Tschappina ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor and church historian .

Life

Emil Camenisch was born on April 17th, 1874 in Sarn am Heinzenberg in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . His ancestors were farmers. He attended the Bündner Kantonsschule in Chur and then studied theology at the Universities of Basel and Berlin .

On June 25, 1899, he was accepted into the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod in Tamins in the village church there , giving Camenisch the right to work as a pastor in Graubünden. In the same year he became pastor in Flerden , Urmein and Tschappina , where he worked for thirteen years. In 1912 he moved to Valendas and Sagogn , where he stayed for around thirty years. Camenisch was appointed vice dean by the synod after he had already served on its examination committee. From its founding in 1919 until his retirement, Camenisch presided over the Evangelical Association in Gruob and the surrounding area .

In 1943 he resigned from all offices and retired, which he spent in Tschappina. Several times he represented other pastors at short notice, but from then on he devoted himself increasingly to church history. However, the consequences of a serious illness ended his life on July 17, 1958. As he had wished during his lifetime, he was buried in the cemetery of his home village. The University of Zurich had awarded him an honorary doctorate in theology. His extensive estate is kept in the Graubünden State Archives.
