Paul Gustav Fischer (born July 22, 1860 in Copenhagen , † May 1, 1934 in Gentofte ) was a Danish painter.

Fischer was born into the fourth generation of a Jewish family who immigrated from Poland. His father Philip August Fischer wanted to become a painter, but eventually became the owner of a paint and varnish factory. He gave his son Paul Gustav his first painting lessons.

Fischer studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen for two years , but dropped out early.

One of his works was published in the weekly Ude og Hjemme , which appeared from 1877 to 1884 , and brought the young artist a certain popularity.

His early paintings showed cityscapes. After a stay in Paris from 1891 to 1895, his color palette became richer and brighter. In the period from 1890 to 1910, his scenes from the streets of European cities brought him many successes.

Following the example of Carl Larsson, he later painted cheerful genre scenes and nudes in natural surroundings. He also created posters inspired by Théophile Steinlen and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec .

Paul Gustav Fischer also dealt with photography, which he often used as a template for his pictures.
