Paul Haavaoks

Paul Haavaoks (born June 12, 1924 in what was then Järvesuu in Setumaa , Estonia , † September 30, 1983 in Värska , Estonian SSR ) was an Estonian writer and poet .

life and work

Paul Haavaoks worked as a worker and agricultural worker in his youth. He became involved in the Komsomol early on after the Soviet occupation of Estonia . In 1949/50 Haavaoks was the executive secretary of the communist youth association in Saatse municipality in southern Estonia. From 1951 to 1955 Haavaoks was editor of the newspaper Koit ("Dawn"). From 1955 he lived as a freelance writer in Räpina in southern Estonia. His grave is now in Värska.

The first poems by Paul Haavaoks appeared as early as 1937/38. After the end of the Second World War he became one of the most productive nationally known homeland poets of southern Estonia. His poetry describes - often in simple, recurring forms - the landscape, nature and people of his home region on the shores of Lake Peipus . Since the second half of the 1960s, Haavaoks also wrote poetry in his South Estonian dialect . Many of his poems were set to music.
