Paul Halcke

Paul Halcke ( also: Paul Halcken or Paul Halke ), called "the halting one" (* 1662 ; † 1731 in Buxtehude ) was a German mathematician , typist , arithmetic master and calendar maker .

He was the brother of the typist and arithmetic master Johann Halcke and was in 1690 with Heinrich Meißner a founding member of the Hamburgische Kunst -rechnung- loving and practicing society, today the Mathematical Society in Hamburg . From about 1687 he was typist and arithmetic master at the city school in Buxtehude.

In 1694 he published a solution book for Heinrich Meißner's collection of exercises Arithmetischer Kunst-Spiegel . He later wrote his own collection of 574 problems from mathematics and astronomy, the Mathematische Sinnen-Confect , which was translated into various languages ​​and was considered a standard work for 100 years. The tasks are always enriched with poems and descriptions of solution methods. On page 256 he presents the following exercise 289, with the solution of which he is considered the discoverer of the smallest Euler brick :

He also published various folk calendars for the years 1705, 1707, 1715, 1716 and 1725.
