life and work

Paul Hirt was born in Villingen in 1898 as the son of a farmer. At the age of nine he suffered meningitis , which resulted in loss of hearing and some speech. He spent several years in the Heiligenbronn institution for the deaf and dumb before he began an apprenticeship in decorative painting with Albert Säger . The apprenticeship was followed by years of traveling, during which Hirt took on occasional jobs, made copies of old masters and continued his education in private courses. In 1914 he was accepted into the Munich Art Academy , later he studied in Düsseldorf and Rome . This was followed by study visits to Paris , the Netherlands , Dalmatia and Northern Italy , and finally a renewed stay in Rome, where, among other things, he made a portrait of the Pope. From this time close contacts with the Catholic clergy resulted, which were to remain an important client. Some of the works he had made in Rome were presented in the Wiebelt bookstore in Villingen after his return in 1924, including a portrait of Cardinal Franziskus Ehrle . Paul Hirt lived with his family in Villingen until his death in 1951 and created numerous wall frescoes, mosaics and stained glass for churches in south-west Germany. There are also portraits, landscapes and processing of religious subjects of him. Hirt frequented Josef Liebermann's book and art shop at Rietstrasse 1, where the Villingen artist avant-garde met for a discussion group. This resulted in close contacts with artist colleagues such as Waldemar Flaig , Richard Ackermann and Ludwig Engler .
