Paul Hoffmann & Co. (Berlin)

Paul Hoffmann & Co. or Electra Paul Hoffmann & Co. was a novelty and image publisher founded in Berlin in 1904 and registered in the commercial register for photographs and advertising stamps as well as picture and propaganda cards . The company was temporarily based at Belziger Strasse 69 (former house number 27).

History and description

The company, which was founded at the time of the German Empire at the beginning of the 20th century, was owned by the two partners Felix Freund and Paul Hoffmann, although Felix Freund was also able to represent the company alone to third parties.

With its Elektra series "News from around the world," tried the publishing house with colorfully framed and in the light pressure inexpensive reproduced black and white photographs individual moments of contemporary history to hold on Advertising stamps.

In 1908 Felix Freund registered with his “Schöneberger Luxuspapier-Industrie” a patent for a postcard sales cabinet that could be locked to protect against dust and theft.

However , little research has been done to date, particularly on the biography of the company that gave its name to the company: It is known that Paul Hoffmann worked as one of the official photographers for war reporting during the First World War .

The German Historical Museum (DHM) was in early 2018 in the possession of some 200 original photographic prints by Paul Hoffmann & Co. from the time of the First World War. The bundle consists of propaganda postcards with views of various “ theaters of war and operations , trenches , battle positions , war memorials and the like”.
