Paul I (Pope)
Paul I († June 28, 767 in Rome ) was the brother of Stephen II. On May 29, 757, he was appointed his successor as Pope . The two came from an unknown urban Roman family.
Due to the existing disputes between the Church of the East and the West, Paul did not announce his election as Pope to the Eastern Roman emperor, but to the Frankish king .
Since the Franks were bound by battles with the Lombards in their home territory, only knowledge of their loyal ally Paul allowed them to survive the difficulties of his pontificate.
Paul I died on June 28, 767. His remains were transferred to St. Peter soon after his burial in St. Paul .
Catholic feast day is June 28th, the day of his death.
