Paul Illmer (born June 5, 1900 , † April 11, 1995 ) was a German climber and mountaineer . He is considered the oldest all-summit climber in Saxon Switzerland .

Life

Paul Illmer took an early interest in nature and mountaineering. He started climbing at the age of 15 on the Türkenkopf in the Rathener climbing area in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . At the age of 87 he had climbed all 1099 climbing peaks in Saxon Switzerland.

When he became unemployed in the 1920s, he earned additional money as a model for the Dresden landscape photographer Walter Hahn . He had himself photographed for postcards on difficult climbing routes in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, for example as a soloist on the Schusterweg or the Barbarine . He later worked as a laboratory assistant. He was not called up for military service due to a foot injury.

After the Second World War he was for many years the district committee chairman and section head tourism of the hikers and mountaineers organized in the German sports committee in Dresden.

He was an active singer in the mountaineering choir "Kurt Schlosser" .

On August 8, 1985, he celebrated his 70th anniversary climbing on the Türkenkopf.

The saying is ascribed to him: It is easier to become a good climber than an old mountaineer.

Honors

Since 1922 the Illmerweg (VIIc) on Falkenstein in Saxon Switzerland has borne his name, which he committed on the occasion of his 22nd birthday. This path is legendary among climbers due to the overhang known as the "mailbox".
