Career

The former soldier Mukungubila lives in Lubumbashi . As a prophet of the Eternal , television preacher and on social media, he pursues his supposedly divine mission to save the Congo. Even if he primarily satisfies the spiritual needs of his followers, his diatribes are often political and violent. He is directed against the Tutsi and the Rwandans on the one hand, and President Joseph Kabila on the other. On the other hand, he had a good relationship with his predecessor Laurent-Désiré Kabila , which is why he also had a weekly program on television from 1992 to 1994, which contributed a lot to his level of awareness.

Mukungubila was one of 33 presidential candidates in the 2006 presidential election , but only got 0.35% of the vote.

Attacks of December 30, 2013

On December 30, 2013, about 100 men posing as supporters of Mukungubila attacked Ndjili Airport in Kinshasa Province and the General Staff Base. They also occupied Kindu airport and state television RTNC for several hours , announcing, "Gideon Mukungubila has come to free you from Rwandan slavery." This is a statement that relates to the widespread opposition rumor that President Kabila is not a Congolese but a Rwandan. The attacks resulted in at least 55 deaths, including three from the security forces.

The tumult in Lubumbashi between supporters of Mukungubila and security forces on the same day left 28 injured and 35 to 70 dead. On May 15, 2014, Mukungubila was arrested in Johannesburg but released on bail. The request for extradition by the Congo was not granted on May 15, 2015 "for lack of evidence".
