Paul Kanis
Paul Kanis (born January 22, 1899 in Plauen , † July 21, 1978 in Menton ) was a German industrialist.
Life
Kanis graduated from high school in Plauen and studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University in Dresden from 1919 , where he became a member of the Corps Franconia . After completing his studies, he and Herbert Brückner founded the Brückner, Kanis & Co. turbine factory in Dresden in 1924 , which developed into a respected industrial company within a few years. In 1926 it supplied four modern drive turbines for boiler feed pumps for two large power plants owned by the Sächsische Werke corporation . A little later, she received the order for all eight drive turbines for the boiler feed pumps of the express steamer Bremen of Norddeutscher Lloyd .
A contract with Julius Pintsch in Berlin on locomotive lighting machines ensured the company regular sales of small turbines in 1931. From 1933 a rapid rise followed, among other things through orders from the armaments industry, for example with the development of drive turbines for ship auxiliary machines and high-pressure, superheated steam drive systems for the navy. In 1934 Brückner, Kanis & Co. received their first order for the delivery of a large number of ship auxiliary machines from the Deutsche Werken in Kiel . Customers during this time included the navy and air force, the German shipyards, the Deutsche Reichsbahn , various electricity supply companies, companies from the mining and iron and steel industries as well as chemical and other factories. At the end of August 1944, the head of the development department at Brückner, Kanis & Co., Rudolph Friedrich, also took part in the secret development conference of the "Kraftfahrtechnischen Lehranstalt der Waffen-SS (KTL) Vienna" in St. Aegyd am Neuwalde. The aim of the conference was the development of a gas-steam engine to drive tanks. The prototype of the engine was to be tested on the Reich's own high-pressure field test facility at Brückner, Kanis & Co. Dresden. The head of the high-pressure field testing system was Carlotto Martin, one of the last doctoral students of the mechanical engineer Enno Heidebroek at the Technical University of Dresden.
After Herbert Brückner left in 1937, Paul Kanis was the sole owner of the company. In 1945 the factory facilities were dismantled by the Soviet occupying forces, the company was expropriated and made public property as VEB Turbinenfabrik Dresden . In February 1947 Kanis moved with some of his closest collaborators to the West and carried out construction work for the British military government. The turbine was manufactured in cooperation with the Howaldt shipyard in Hamburg. In 1951 Kanis bought its own production site in Nuremberg and relocated the production site there. In 1965 he retired into private life. The turbine plant became part of the AEG group as AEG-Kanis GmbH .
