Paul Krien

Paul Krien (born April 30, 1873 in Sagan , Silesia , † February 1935 in the German Empire ) was a German cameraman specializing in nature and wildlife photography.

Live and act

Born in Lower Silesia, the son of a police officer, he went through a photography school and learned the practical trade for four years with the court photographer Paul Fundner in Berlin's Potsdamer Strasse 111. He then worked as a photographer for several companies in the German provinces before moving to cinematography on October 15, 1901 , which at the time was still in its infancy, came across. Until 1903 Krien worked as a laboratory assistant for the Deutsche Mutoscop- und Biograph-Gesellschaft, then in the same position until 1908 with Oskar Messter . From 1908 to 1910 he worked as operations manager and camera operator for Alfred Duskes' company . After 1911 Krien worked as a freelancer until he was drafted in 1916.

Back in civilian life, Paul Krien went to Neutral-Film as operations manager in 1918, then to Deulig-Film AG until 1921. In 1921 he was hired by Ernst Krieger's UFA cultural department as a recording operator (cameraman). In the next decade and a half, up to his death in 1935, Krien photographed a wealth of mostly short nature and documentary films by UFA and soon made a name for himself as a specialist in animal and wildlife photography.

His son was the feature film cameraman and color film specialist Werner Krien .
