Paul Mecheril

Paul Mecheril (* 1962 ) is a German educational scientist , since June 2019 Professor at the Institute for Educational Science at Bielefeld University , Department of Migration Education .

Life

Paul Mecheril grew up in Germany and India. In the 1980s he studied psychology and philosophy at the universities of Trier, Bielefeld, Vienna and Münster. At the University of Münster he did his doctorate with a thesis on the linguistic process in psychotherapy conversations in psychology, at the University of Bielefeld he completed his habilitation in educational science with a study on (multiple) affiliations in the migration society .

From March 2008 to September 2011 he held the professorship “Intercultural Learning and Social Change” at the Institute for Educational Science at the University of Innsbruck ; at the same time he was head of the Innsbruck Institute for Educational Science. Since October 2011 he has been a professor at the Institute for Education at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg. The denomination of the professorship was initially "Intercultural Education", since 2016 it has been "Migration and Education". Paul Mecheril is also director of the Center for Migration, Education and Cultural Studies (CMC) there.

The main focus of Paul Mecheril's teaching and research interests include migration education, educational professionalism, racism and domination theory, cultural studies, and methodological and methodological questions of interpretation.

He is a member of the Migration Council .

Until May 2019, Paul Mecheril was Professor of Migration and Education at the Institute for Education at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and Director of the Center for Migration, Education and Cultural Studies there.

Awards

In March 1998, together with Thomas Teo, he received the annual award of the State Youth Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and SOS-Rassismus for the jointly published book Psychology and Racism. In 2013 Mecheril received the Höffmann Science Award for Intercultural Competence .
