Educational science has been a collective term that has been used for various scientific disciplines , especially in Austria , Switzerland , the Netherlands and South Tyrol , but also in Germany since 1968 . B. Educational economics , pedagogy , pedagogical psychology or pedagogical sociology ( educational sociology ), which deal with education in the broadest sense .

The Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt in Austria was founded in 1970 as the “University for Educational Sciences” and from 1975 to 1993 was called the “University of Educational Sciences”. At some universities, the term is the faculty name , e.g. B. in Duisburg-Essen , Koblenz-Landau , Klagenfurt and in Bozen . At other universities, the term "educational sciences" stands for an independent subject , e.g. B. in Hagen , Hanover , Lüneburg , Freiburg , Magdeburg, Vienna or Twente , or is part of the teacher training , z. B. in Bonn , Dresden , Leipzig , Saarbrücken or Mainz . In Baden-Württemberg, the universities of teacher education were transformed into so-called "centers for educational sciences " at university level with independent doctorate and habilitation rights . They conduct basic research on the phenomenon of "education" and, in connection with practice, develop findings on how educational, teaching and learning processes can be initiated and conveyed. The field of activity also extends to fields such as health, culture and media education and affects all age groups from elementary education to adult education.

In contrast to the earlier, more humanities -based pedagogy, the term indicates the interdisciplinary and holistic nature of the questions, methods, studies and courses of study.
