E. Paul Schneider (born March 6, 1884 in Plauen , Vogtland , † around 1969 ) was a German painter and graphic artist . He was the last court painter to Kaiser Wilhelm II and his last wife Hermine .

Life

Paul Schneider spent most of his life as a painter in Leipzig , where he also illustrated books and designed covers. He died in the GDR around 1969 and was forgotten. A large part of his picture collection was lost in the air raids on Leipzig in 1943–1945.

Professional activities

1898-1902 he attended the Royal Industrial School in his hometown. He then worked for two years as a draftsman and designer at Oskar Starke in Plauen. He then moved from 1904 to 1907 as a sample graphic designer in the Winterstein & Quaas embroidery factory in Leipzig. 1908–1915 Schneider studied at the Royal Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Trade in Leipzig; he received several awards and was introduced to Hermine by Schoenaich-Carolath - Wilhelm's later wife.

After the First World War he was employed as a teacher for lithography at the Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Industry in Leipzig from 1919 to 1921. Afterwards Schneider worked as a freelance artist and worked on order for the former emperor and Hermine. As court painter, he kept in touch with the “Empress” in the Doorn House in the Netherlands even after Wilhelm's death in 1941 .

From 1940 onwards, Schneider was a trade student councilor at the Leipzig vocational school. No further information is known.
