Paul Schumacher

Paul Schumacher (* around 1850; † 1927 ) was a German railway engineer.

Life

Paul Schumacher attended the Berlin Business Academy. In 1869 he was one of the founders of the Corps Alemannia Berlin . After completing his training, he entered the service of the Prussian railways and became a mechanical engineer in Berlin. In 1881 he was appointed railroad engineer. There he was responsible for the development of technical standards for the galvanizing of iron in railway maintenance. In 1882 he was appointed railway machinery inspector. In 1888 he was transferred from Berlin to Potsdam and appointed head of the main workshop there. In 1890 he received the appointment of railway director with the rank of councilor fourth class.

In Potsdam he initiated the establishment of the Daheim eG housing association in 1894 . As a recognized railway technician, he worked as a co-author of the 3rd volume, 1st half of the maintenance and operation of the railways of the standard work Die Eisenbahn-Technik der Gegenwart , published in 1901 . After a series of fatal fires in railway wagons, he developed new technical standards for railway wagons to reduce and better control the risk of fire. This included covering the floors with asbestos sheets and metal sheets, sealing holes, impregnating the wooden floors and side walls with a fire retardant, shielding the seat cushions with sheet metal or asbestos cardboard, replacing flammable belts with Knippenberg wire cushions, replacing linen with wool curtains, replacing Coconut velor mats with soaked chair cane mats and the use of wool carpets in 1st class.

On January 2, 1915, his request to be released from civil service was granted.
