Paul James Scriven, Baron Scriven (* 7. February 1966 in Huddersfield ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats and Life Peer .

Life

As he has mentioned in various places, Scriven is the son of a garbage man . He attended Rawthorpe High School in Huddersfield , but left without a degree and worked for a road construction company for two years . He then continued his (university) education, first at Huddersfield Technical College and finally at Manchester Polytechnic , from where he received a bachelor's degree . In 1990 he was president of the student council at his university.

He then pursued a management career at the National Health Service and became one of the youngest UK hospital managers before moving into the private sector. As a leading manager, he is involved in various companies, such as Apps2Connect or Scriven Consulting .

Scriven lives in Sheffield with his longtime partner David .

Political career

After being a member of the Labor Party for a short time , Scriven joined the Liberal Democrats . From 2000 to 2012 he was a member of the Sheffield City Council and from 2008 to 2011 he chaired it. From 2002 to 2011 he was also chairman of the Liberal Democrats in Sheffield.

In the 2010 general election , he ran for the Liberal Democrats , but was narrowly inferior to Paul Blomfield and missed entry into the House of Commons .

On September 19, 2014, he was promoted to the status of a Life Peer . He has been in the House of Lords ever since and officially bears the title Baron Scriven, of Hunters Bar in the City of Sheffield . He announced that he would campaign for the abolition of the House of Lords and for its replacement by a second elected chamber.
