Paul Surer

Paul Surer (* 1905 ; † after 1969) was a French Romance studies and literary scholar .

life and work

Surer passed the Agrégation de lettres in 1934 and taught at the Lycée Marcelin-Berthelot (LMB) in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés . Later he was assistant and maître assistant at the Sorbonne .

Surer was best known as a co-author (together with Pierre-Georges Castex and Georges Becker) of "Castex-Surer" (Hachette Verlag), a manual on literary history that was widely used in schools and universities in the second half of the 20th century Manuel des études littéraires françaises (6 volumes, Paris 1946–1953, edition in 2 volumes, Paris 1954, most recently 1992–1993; edition under the title Histoire de la littérature française , Paris 1974, 1977, 1984). Together with the "Lagarde-Michard" (by André Lagarde and Laurent Michard ), the Castex-Surer was one of the most prominent representatives of the French manual tradition introduced by Gustave Lanson .
