André Lagarde

André Lagarde (born October 13, 1912 in Touille , Haute-Garonne , † November 19, 2001 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French literary historian and textbook author.

life and work

Lagarde went to school in Toulouse , passed the Agrégation de lettres in 1938 and returned to his school as a high school teacher. From 1943 he taught in Saint-Germain-en-Laye , then in Paris at the Lycée Buffon and at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand . In 1969 he became General Inspector of Education.

Together with Laurent Michard (who was his colleague in Toulouse) he created (for school use) from 1948 to 1962 in 6 volumes the most famous and best-selling literary history in France, the "Lagarde et Michard", which, as the Bordas publishing house's answer to the " Castex-Surer ”(by Pierre-Georges Castex and Paul Surer) by the Hachette publishing house, which developed the richly illustrated connection between biography and anthology (with commentary). The work has seen numerous editions up to the present day. Although it was no longer used as a school book from 1992, it had long since become a classic and a sure-fire success by then.
