Sniper's Ridge is an American war film directed by John A. Bushelman from 1961 that was shot in black and white.

action

Just before the end of the Korean War. The courageous but battle-tired Private Scharack learns that his overdue leave from the front was prevented by his superior, the strict but cowardly Captain Tombolo. The angry Scharack goes to the field hospital and pretends to have a severe headache. But the equally tired doctor dismisses him again. Scharack is thundered by Tombolo on his return to latrine duty.

The night before the expected armistice, Tombolo orders a patrol behind enemy lines, angering the soldiers, and especially Scharack. But before the patrol starts, Tombolo accidentally steps on a mine. It's a " bouncing betty ", a mine that explodes when the victim takes his foot off the detonator. None of the soldiers can help Tombolo. Only Scharack comes to the aid of his captain. He puts him in thick jackets and tells him to jump away from the mine. But the raffle is so scared that he can't move. Scharack pushes away the tombolo, which nothing happens to when the mine explodes. Scharack is badly wounded and taken to the hospital.

The armistice is announced at 10 p.m. Tombolo's slow attempt to apologize is rejected by his men.

Reviews

Eugene Archer of the New York Times suggested that the producer and director Bushelman targeted his antihero drama anti-militarists. But the whole thing would have baffled an Errol Flynn too .

background

The 20th Century Fox production premiered in February 1961.
